What is a Drill Point Die?

The precision cold-forging tool that forms the self-drilling tip on every TEK screw.

A drill point die is a precision tungsten carbide or high-speed steel tool used in cold forging to form the self-drilling point on self-tapping screws (also called TEK screws or DIN 7504 screws). During production, a matched pair of dies clamp against the rotating screw blank at high speed, cold-forging the tip into a sharp, multi-fluted drill geometry — without any material removal or cutting.

The resulting self-drilling point allows the finished screw to penetrate steel, aluminum, and other metal substrates without a pre-drilled pilot hole, eliminating a separate drilling step and dramatically increasing assembly efficiency in construction, HVAC, roofing, and light steel framing applications worldwide.

Die quality directly impacts screw production yield and consistency. Premium tooling with precise geometry and mirror-polished flute surfaces produces cleaner drill points, reduces screw rejection rates, and extends intervals between die changes. Die Series: L1 Through L6

L1-L2 form smaller screws (IFI #4-#8, flute 2.7ℓ-4.0ℓ), L3-L4 cover mid-range sizes (#8-#12, up to 11.7ℓ), and L5-L6 handle the largest heavy-duty screws (#12-#14, flute lengths up to 17.7ℓ).
